Movie Review - The Hunger Games

I thought of writing this review immediately after seeing the movie at 12:01 AM on Thursday, March 23rd. However I realized that I needed to see it again because that night I, like many others, was caught up in the hype and excitement that was the anticipation of The Hunger Games.  So here's my review only mere minutes after getting out of the theater for a second viewing.

I still maintain that director Gary Ross is primarily responsible for the failings of this movie.  While after discussing the film with a fellow enthusiast, I came to appreciate the shaky, choppy camera footage at the beginning of the film as a snapshot of how Katniss functions on a daily basis in the dreary, oppression that is "starving in safety" inside District 12.  The footage does slow down once she escapes to the woods, which readers of the novels will remember was the place she felt safe to be herself and drop the mask she wears while in the district.  However the pre-Reaping setup and superfluous crowd shots were totally unnecessary and a waste of screentime that would've been better spent on character development.

The footage of Katniss & Gale in the woods is great.  However, like some critics have stated, the emotional connection is lacking throughout most of the film due to the sparse character development.  Rue's death or when Katniss is burned may be one of the first scenes where the audience feels anything.  A great opportunity to have the audience really understand Katniss & Gale's connection was lost in that woods scene.  A couple of extra lines of dialogue is all it would have taken.  Perhaps we'll discover the scene was longer when the DVD comes out.

Overall the movie is still good.  Love the behind the scenes look into the Control Room, Games commentary, and President Snow's prodding of Seneca Crane.  Others have commented that they cut a lot of things from the book.  I for one was overjoyed that they cut Peeta losing his leg.  Other things they cut from the movie for two major reasons.  First, they wanted a PG-13 rating.  I'm pretty certain if they had kept just Cato's death scene true to the book they would've gotten an R rating.  Secondly, who would've wanted to sit through a three hour plus movie.  I love the books beyond words but had they included all of the District 12 characters, drawn out the Games to the approximately three weeks they were in the book, and included the hospital scene at the end, this would have been a really long movie.

Some of the things that were slightly disappointing because they were cut or not done well, but can be forgiven for the greater good of the movie:
  1. the origin of the mockingjay pin
  2. the indirect mention of tesserae (getting more food by adding your name to the Tribute drawing)
  3. the cheesy flames on their backs for the presentation of the Tributes
  4. the change of location for what was a rooftop scene to a huge window in the penthouse
  5. the Cornucopia was not golden
  6. the exclusion of Katniss suffering from dehydration
  7. the exclusion of the sleep syrup
  8. the afore-mentioned shortening of the Games
  9. a lot of close-ups that narrow your ability to read something into the characters' actions
  10. not a cut but a missed opportunity to play up the Katniss & Gale relationship by having a secret scene of the kiss as written in Catching Fire
One thing that can't be forgiven because it displaces the pyschological scars that needed to exist to justify the genuineness of a continued relationship between Katniss and Peeta is the muttations at the end of the Games.  In the movie they are nothing but big dogs.  I was really expecting to see something resembling a werewolf, with the human eyes and hair colors of the fallen tributes.  At the very least they could've placed the collars on them denoting they were retribution for the fallen tributes.  These two 16 year-olds needed to be so scarred from their time in the Games that they suffer from nightmares and develop a true (not made for TV) friendship based on their shared PTSD.  At the end they just seem to whole and undamaged.

In closing, I've also read personal comments from individuals criticizing that the movies feature young people killing each other.  To these individuals I say the following: "Do you live under a rock in Timbuktu or did you make the conscious choice to remain ignorant of the content and plot of the movie by avoiding all television and internet promotions until after you saw the movie?   If in fact you do not live under a rock in Timbuktu, how dare you act all sanctimonious about the movie that you obviously went to view and clearly states in the Treaty of Treason at the beginning that 12 to 18 year-olds are required to fight to the death."

That is all.  May the odds be ever in your favor...until The 75th Hunger Games circa November 2013!

Spring Break Hiatus

Yes it's close enough to spring and the spring break I get at my day job for me to consider taking a spring break hiatus from the blog. While you won't see any new posts for the next few days, possibly even weeks, that doesn't mean that I won't be diligently working on new material.

We still have the continuation of the Hidden Hair Threat coming down the pipeline.  Also there will be interviews and makeover photos. We simply need some time to get these events and ideas fully formed and typed to be posted.

Look forward to reading new material in a few days!

Losing Wait

Absolutely loving the blog post Losing Wait from Mary Kay's CMO Sheryl Adkins-Green! Obviously she's not talking about the weight that most people resolve to lose every new year, but the "wait" she mentions is just as if not more important.

I've decided to replace my "wait" with "S.T.A.R.T" also...

• S= Start smaller to achieve bigger. In other words, I break my goal down into manageable and achievable segments, instead of a big chunk that will overwhelm me.
• T= Target a specific time each day to work on my goal, even if it’s only 30 minutes. I literally schedule it. I make an appointment with me and I keep it!
• A= Ask for help and accept help. So often, we’re so busy doing for others that we feel that we can’t or shouldn’t ask for help. Yet we all have at least one friend or family member who is willing and able to support our goal. We just need to ask!
• R= Reward my progress. It’s important to celebrate each success along the way, no matter how small. Plus, who doesn’t love a reason to get a new pair of shoes?
• T= Treat time as my most precious resource and make every minute count.

What are you going to "start" when you lose your "wait"?

The Hidden Hair Threat - Part 2

Well we've identified that hard water might be the culprit behind your hair and also your skin issues. For right now however, we going to focus on the hair in this series.

So what exactly makes water hard?  Depending upon the source of your water, it may naturally contain dissolved minerals ranging from calcium, copper, iron, magnesium, and silica.  Each of these dissolved minerals can build up on your hair shaft just like over time they build up on the interior of your plumbing or around your faucets and shower heads.  Go ahead run to your bathroom and see if you have a little buildup around your faucet or on your shower ahead.

Did you check?

Well the minerals that don't collect there can make it to your hair and scalp.  Since hair is fine (only about 180 micrometers in diameter even in the coarsest of hair) it doesn't take an extreme coating of minerals to notice effects. What are some of those effects?

Calcium and silica build up cause similar effects such as dry and weighted down hair, dandruff, hair breakage, blockage of new hair growth, and hair loss. It can even cause perms to be relaxed. Magnesium can also cause hair to feel dry and weighed down.  Copper and iron can discolor your hair.  All of these minerals can interfere with any chemical services you get.

So how do you find out for sure if you have hard water? Visit your local hardware store and pick up a hard water test kit. It's not very expensive and very easy to use. In part 3 I'll share the results of my most recent water test and whether or not my in-shower water filter is actually working. But check out the video below to see the follow-up to using the first version of my hard water hair rinse.

If you watched part 1, you'll see that the flaking cleared up. I've reset my test trials by not using the rinse and going back to regular preconditioning, then shampoo and leave-in conditioner routine.

The products that I've been using for preconditioning and shampooing are from Avon.  However I won't say the specific names here, as I wouldn't personally recommend the shampoo because it contains sodium laureth sulfate and sodium lauryl sulfate.  Continuing to use these products and making the only change in my routine the use of the hair rinse I'm formulating will give a more realistic view of it's effects.  You'll be able to come back soon and watch a new blog series on that...

Ten Songs to Add to Your Workout Playlist

Ten Songs to Add to Your Workout Playlist

Ten Songs to Add to Your Workout Playlist

By Nathanel Jefferson

Working out can be a chore for many people, but with the right music it can be an enjoyable and fast experience. There are millions of songs that would make an amazing workout playlist, but these have been chosen for their overall appeal. Everyone's taste in music may be different, but you should be able to find one song you like. Below are 10 songs that you should have in your playlist. In no particular order of course!
10. Puff Daddy & Notorious B.I.G (feat Busta Rhymes) - Victory
"I perform like Mike anyone - Tyson, Jordan, Jackson", a simple line that sums up Victory. A great start out song with its slow intro and powerful lyrics from Puff and B.I.G. Busta Rhymes' part in the song is quite explicit, with its heavy use of Mafioso Rap(Crime Rap) style, which was popular during the time. You may or may not also recognize the music as Victory also sampled Bill Conti "Going the Distance" heavily.
9. Bill Conti - Gonna Fly Now
Yep! The theme from the movie Rocky, this song can't help but make you feel like a champ. Released in 1977, Gonna Fly Now is as much a part of American culture as apple pie, even if you may not know the name, I bet once you hear it you will know the song. This song is widely played at sporting events in Philadelphia where Rocky made his famous run up the steps of the Philadelphia Museum of Art. Even with its 30 word lyrics is a must have for any playlist.
8. Daft Punk - Harder Better Faster Stronger
Release by the French duo in 2001, Harder Better Faster Stronger features a robotic vocal with driving bass and steady beat. The lyrics are quite limited like "Gonna Fly Now", but an amazing song for running. This song is heavily sampled in Kanye's song "stronger", which provides a more lyrical and slower version.
7. Fort Minor - Remember the Name
Even if you never heard of this band, I am sure you heard this song, "This is ten percent luck, twenty percent skill, fifteen percent concentrated power of will five percent pleasure, fifty percent pain And a hundred percent reason to remember the name". This song is extensively used in stadiums across the United States, going as far as being the theme for the NBA Playoffs in 2006 and 2007. With its aggressive lyrics and fast tempo, one can easily see why it is popular among sports fans.
6. Eminem feat Nate Dogg- Till I collapse
Using the beats made famous by Queen- "We will Rock You", this is an amazing song for any playlist with its strong lyrics. This is a favorite of many runners and weightlifters as it provides them with that extra motivation to just keep moving.
5. Dr. Horrible - Brand New Day
You may never hear of this song, but it's from the popular Dr. Horrible Sing-Along Blog! What makes this a great for song for a workout playlist is simple - the lyrics. With a strong tempo, the song is about the point in your life when you realize what you want and it's about to be a brand new day. The old you is gone and a new and better you is coming!
4. David Garrett - Asturias
David Garret rock symphony version of Asturias is an amazing and powerful song. If you like songs from the movie 300, then this one should be up your ally. With powerful and fast tempo violin, this song will get you pumping! If you like this song, you should check out Garret's other works as they are just beautiful.
3. Wolfmother - Joker and the Thief
A classic of many playlists, the intro alone is enough to get you off your butt and start moving. It is widely used in movies such as Shoot 'Em Up and video game Need for Speed: Carbon. It is also the song used to get the Oregon Ducks football team pumped up. Random Fact: The joker and thief are reference to "All Along the Watchtower."
2. Queen - Another One Bites The Dust
A classic of Queen, with its "Good Times" inspired bass and aggressive lyrics. Queen has many songs worth mentioning for any workout playlist, this one was chosen because Stallone was unable to get permission to use this song for Rocky III, so he requested someone to write him a song...
1. Survivor - Eye of the Tiger
A song made just for Rocky III! This is pretty much the all time staple of any playlist. Somewhat corny at times, you cannot deny the sure motivation this song gives you during a workout. "It's the eye of the tiger, it's the thrill of the fight, risin' up to the challenge of our rival." How can you not want to active with such lyrics?! Everyone should have this song in their workout playlist!

The Hidden Hair Threat - Part 1

You may have it and not even be aware of it.  Your hair seems dull and dry no matter what you put on it and you've tried a number of different products. Your chemical processes (perms, relaxers, coloring, highlighting) seem to take longer or don't come out just right.  Then there's the most dreaded hair problems of unsightly flaking and thinning hair.  You search for the right product, the right stylist, the right diagnosis but can never seem to find the solution.  There may be one hidden threat that you're overlooking in your own home that you come into contact with regularly:  Hard Water.

According to some sources 85% of homes have hard water. The minerals that make water hard can wreak havoc on your hair: discoloration, dryness and the flaking and breakage you'll notice in the video below.

In part 2, we'll dive deeper into what makes water hard and things that might help.  We'll also have another video with after shots from using version one of the in-production hard water hair rinse.

Fragrance of the Month - Feb 2012

This month's fragrance is Far Away from Avon. It is in the Oriental fragrance family.  Avon describes it as a mix of "dreamy florals, spiced amber and spirit-moving woods".

This fragrance really lives up to its name as it goes on with a light but rich scent that makes you think of being on an exotic vacation somewhere far away (no pun intended) with that special someone.

If you'd like to experience it, I'll be giving away free samples all month long.

Sorry for the Temporary Absence of...

A lot of the posts lately have been just the Daily Deals, but don't think that I'm not busy creating new valuable content similar to the 2010 video embedded in the Brazilian Keratin Treatment post. Here are a few of the things you can look forward to in the near future:

  • There will be a series of posts chronicling my process and the results of a hair treatment I'm formulating.

Clean Your Stinky Head Scarf...and other things - Part 4

And now the conclusion of the series...

We've addressed the head scarves, the combs and brushes, and makeup tools.  Now let's cover the last items on the original list.
  • Nail clippers, tweezers and other metal tools
Begin by cleaning the item with soap & water or any cleaner you prefer but make sure you dry it thoroughly.  Drying thoroughly is essential to avoid rusting and the dulling of any sharp edges.

For that extra level of clean called disinfected, you can soak the items in rubbing (isopropyl) alcohol for about 10 minutes.  This is fine if you're cleaning your personal items (no sharing allowed) at home but by salon standards only 99% isopropyl alcohol is definitively effective.  The alcohol in my medicine cabinet is only 91%.  Once the items come out of their alcohol bath, again it's highly important to completely dry them with a clean paper towel.

  • Glasses
If you worn prescription glasses for any length of time, I'm sure you're aware of the special "glasses cleaners" and "cleaning cloths" out there.  These are typically designed for your lenses but leave much to be desired in cleaning the frames (you know the part that touches your face and the part your hands, which touch everything, grab to put on or take off your glasses).

We last year while getting my daughter her first pair of glasses, the optometrist gave us this wonderful tip for keeping them clean.  Forget all of the cleaners and special cloths.  If you want to keep any type of glasses (prescription or sun) clean, wash and dry them like you would your hands.  Liquid antibacterial hand soap and warm water on every part of your glasses (lenses and frames) and then dry with a clean low-lint paper towel.  So no more getting talked into buying all those extras for cleaning by the vendor in the mall, flea market, or a shady optometrist.

    • Pillowcases

These should be laundered weekly at least just like the head scarf.  Do it more often than that if you're able because who wants the different items you may be putting in your hair clogging the pores on your face.

    • Cell Phones
My favorite thing to clean a cell phone with:  baby wipes.  For that extra level of clean, I occasionally use any disinfectant wipe that I have handy.  However, the nice thing about using baby wipes is that you can use one for your phone and another for your hands.

In closing, remember that keeping it clean often equates to staying physically well.

      Natural Hair YouTube Channel recommendation

In the future once we work out some video-editing program issues, E-Class Ventures will be posting how-to videos for hair, make-up, and skin care. Some of them have already been made but unfortunately not edited yet. Here are some photos of a braided style done by the founder to enjoy until then.

Fragrance of the Month - Introduction

This year ECV will be highlighting a different fragrance each month.  Let's begin by giving you a little background knowledge about fragrance families. In the beginning there were four basic families:  Floral, Oriental, Woody and Fresh. Now when shopping for a fragrance you may see or hear from the lady at the sales counter a number of other descriptions such as fruity, fresh or spicy. Here we're going to keep it simple and stick to the original four.

This month we picked the fragrance via the MK Personal Beauty Profiler's fragrance finder. We decided to use the find by personality and must say that the profiler worked whether well.  It matched ECV's founder (a multi-tasking girl always on the go that loves to travel) with one of her favorites, the Belara Eau de Parfum, which falls under the Floral family.

Click to learn more about the fragrance's composition or to purchase a bottle.

Click to learn more details about the fragrance wheel currently used by the fragrance industry. Remember a well-informed consumer is a happy consumer.

Ruben Studdard at the Ritz Theatre

Just sharing for all the real R&B lovers that Ruben Studdard will be performing at the Ritz Theatre here in Jacksonville on January 13th.

Check out all the tour dates.

The Birth of a Video Game

ECV founder here! I think the best thing about teaching children is the endless possibilities ahead of them and seeing them actually reach for those possibilities. It's inspiring and adds to the teacher's mental wellness when they actually recognize the ambition some students have.

Take for example Hunter: I won't tell too much about him, but he's special and talented! He's designing a first person shooter video game set during World War I and allowing others to follow him through the process.  If video games are your thing or you've always been curious about how it's done, check out his website.

Ambition, motivation and possibilities becoming reality right before your eyes! Can't tell me that doesn't contribute to your overall well-being.
